"This scene, painted in the 1850s, shows Meigg's Wharf, which was built between Powell and Mason Streets in 1853 and extended sixteen hundred feet into the Bay. Filbert Street is in the foreground and Powell Street is in the right middleground. In the left background, the edge of Alcatraz Island is beyond." Warren Richardson Howell was president of the famous San Francisco bookstore John Howell Books. .
