Specially bound in red, white and blue leather, this is a presentation copy of a series of booklets produced during WW2 by the Essex County War Welfare Committee, made for Sir Francis HDC Whitmore by Colonel Dudley Sherwood. A presentation letter from the latter to the former is tipped in to the prelims, celebrating the £10,000 raised for Essex War Welfare by the publications included. These are: 1. Lights of Essex, 1942, 50pp, with a foreword by Churchill, and contributions from Margery ALlingham, Philip Guedalla, HG Wells, Bruce Bairnsfather and others; 2. Battle Over Essex, R.J.Thompson, ND, 66pp; 3. Montgomery A Portrait, R.J.Thompson, 1945, 68pp; 4. Essex Started The U.S. R.J.Thompson, 1943, 8pp; 5. Welcome To Essex - An invitation to the troops in this County, especially the Americans, to inspect some its most interesting features, 1943, 32pp. Each of these publications is in VG or better condition and scarce in its own right. Binding is by Truslove & Hanson, with gilt Essex standard to front and initials F.H.D.C.W. 1946. Five raised bands and gilt titling to spine. A unique and fascinating item. 8vo . Very Good/No Jacket.
