Vergil began composing this history of England at the encouragement of Henry VII. Three editions were published between 1534 and 1555, with each new edition covering more years.This twenty-seventh book covers an account of Henry VIII's reign to 1537, and includes a highly critical portrait of Wolsey. Vergil claimed that most of his work on the last book was done contemporaneously with the events as they unfolded.
