Marcel Broodthaers (b. January 28, 1924 d. January 28, 1976) was a Belgian poet, filmmaker and artist. He struggled with poverty for twenty years as a poet, before the idea of inventing something insincere dawned on him which began with the production of objects such as embedding fifty unsold copies of his book of poems Pense-Bête in plaster as "a concrete gesture", in which one cannot access the book without destroying the sculpture, passing this prohibition along to the viewer. "During his short yet prolific period as an artist, he radically rethought conventional approaches to poetry, film, books, and exhibition practice itself, proving enormously influential to future generations of artists." (Francis Wilmott, MoMA).
