Bevelled edges. Housed in a custom blue cloth chemise in a blue quarter leather slipcase. Engraved title leaf [by Walter Crane]. T.p. publisher logo. 12mo. 7-5/8" x 5" Author's 1st book, a travelogue about a canoeing trip through France and Belgium in 1876. It is considered as a pioneering work of outdoor literature. It's "a fundamentally Romantic work in style and tone, [which] paints a delightful atmosphere of Europe in a more innocent time, with quirky innkeepers, traveling entertainers and puppeteers, old men who had never left their villages, ramshackle military units parading with drums and swords, and gypsy-like families who lived on canal barges." [Wiki]. Modest wear & soiling to binding. Slight lean, spine sunned a bit. Minute paper cracks to hinges. Small, diamond-shaped binder ticket ["Bound by Burn & Co."] to rear paste-down. A VG copy in an About VG slipcase, which has a much-rubbed & sunned spine.
