- Errors of the Roman Catholic Church and Its Influence in the United States and Other Countries by the Most Profound Thinkers of the Present Day and the History and Progress of the American Protective Association by Scott F. Hershey, Ph. D. , and Associates Including the Sufferings and Deaths of the Protestant Martyrs, Under Popish Persecutions

St. Louis, Missouri, J.H. Chambers & Company, 1894. Hardcover. 608p. An orange decorated cloth hardcover book with a pictorial cover. Good condition; corners a bit bumped, former owner signature on front endpaper; hinges repaired with tape. Text clean and binding secure. Illustrated with 48 Full Page Engravings. Begins with a brief history of the American Protective Association, or A.P.A. an initially secret society founded in 1887 to galvanize Protestants against Catholic immigration and Catholic influence on schools. A less prominent echo of the Know-Nothing movement of the 1850s, the A.P.A. focused its efforts on social support for members, candidates, or causes rather than entering politics directly as an official party. The book identifies Rome as a threat to American freedom and denounces its alleged political power. Also includes chapters by various contributors on controversial Catholic practices and doctrines, such as indulgences, Purgatory, and transubstantiation. Good .
