He wanted to join the navy, but it became merchant navy. At twenty-seven he became a captain. In total Kees made fifty sea voyages. He married Catharina (Kaatje) Douwes Dekker. His Memories, written for son Theodorus, are candid, humorous and at times emotional, especially about the influence of brother-in-law Eduard (Multatuli) on the family. Kees interweaves his private life with a detailed description of his life as a sailor and experiences in Suriname and the Indies.
