A blind beggar leaning on crutches near a chestnut tree, holds a matchbox in one hand. Two figures in conversation in the background. Engraving on wove paper, sheet size 370 x 298 mm., platemark 278 x 206 mm. Engraving by Johannes Josephus Aarts, after his own design in 1907 Johannes Josephus Aarts (The Hague 1871-1934 Amsterdam) was a printmaker, art teacher and author. He taught at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (The Hague), and was later successor to Pieter Dupont at the Rijksacademie Amsterdam. Many of his engravings feature beggars and scenes from everyday life. Finely detailed engraving, a gorgeous impression in excellent condition. References: Kersten 22
