Amsterdam, Justus Dankerts, 1683, (8),205,(3) pag., engraved portrait vignette of Horace on title, 103 engraved emblems by Otto van Veen, early 20th cent. halfvellum, small quarto (21,7 x 16,5 cm.). = Landwehr Emblem books, 690 ("Copperplates from the Latin 1607 edition, reduced and reversed"). Rare first edition of this famous emblem book by Dutch poet Anthoni Jansen, based on the Antwerp 1607 Latin text edition of Otto van Veen's enduringly popular Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata, illustrating the poems of Horace, with verses in Dutch, Latin, and French. This emblematical work by Van Veen constituted a significant development in the design and conceptualization of emblem books as well as the optimization of their didactic impact. By transposing the works of the Roman poet Horace into innovative images through prints of a high technical quality the work could be used for philosophical and moral meditation. Van Veen was a painter, draughtsman and humanist, primarily active in Antwerp and Brussels. He is known for his paintings of religious and mythological scenes, allegories and portraits, which he produced in his large workshop in Antwerp, where from 1594 or 1595 to 1598 he was amongst others the teacher of Peter Paul Rubens and proved himself influential as an educated humanist artist (doctor pictus) on Rubens. Copy restored from waterstaining; binding renewed, edges newly marbled.

Books are in good antiquarian condition, unless described otherwise. Serious defects are stated, minor defects not always. All prices are in Euro, tax included, but without postage, packing and bank charges which are at buyer's expense. Shipping of books after receipt of payment. Books may be returned within 14 working days (prior notification welcome). A full refund can be expected if the books do not match the description stated. Otherwise, only the price of the books (excluding shipping costs) will be refunded.
Orders from the Netherlands and other Euro-countries preferably paid by bank transfer.
We also accept VISA, Mastercard/Eurocard, American Express and Paypal at cost.

Onze boeken verkeren in goede antiquarische staat, tenzij anders beschreven. Kleine onvolkomenheden zijn niet altijd vermeld. Prijzen zijn in Euro, inclusief BTW (niet apart vermeld, omdat we deelnemen aan de margeregeling voor antiquaren) en exclusief portokosten.
Een bestelling per e-mail wordt altijd met een e-mail beantwoord. Bestellingen worden doorgaans verstuurd na betaling vooraf.
We behouden ons het recht voor de goederen te verzekeren en/of aangetekend te verzenden. De kosten daarvan worden veelal doorberekend aan de koper.
Boeken blijven eigendom van de verkoper tot de volle prijs is betaald. Retourzendingen binnen 14 dagen na ontvangst (waarbij voorafgaande kennisgeving op prijs wordt gesteld). In dat geval volgt restitutie van de prijs van het boek (exclusief portokosten). Alleen als de beschrijving foutief was, worden ook de portokosten gerestitueerd. Retourzendingen dienen de verkoper te bereiken in dezelfde staat als waarin ze aan de koper werden verzonden. Het risico van retourzendingen is voor de afzender!
