Large map in rear pocket with some closed tears. ; This is the adventurous journey of Captain Burnaby and Englishman who went on horseback with the support of only a couple of servants through Russia to the city of Khiva (nowadays Uzbekistan). It was winter and the conditions were rough and life threatening. In addition a war was starting. The Captain was one of the first westerners to be able to cross Turkestan as previous travelers have been stopped before. The Russians asked about his business and thought that Burnaby was sent by the English Government. This book is embellished by a large fold-out map in rear pocket of Turkestan. The front pocket contains two small maps: Map of the Imperial Border of russia with China and Sketch Map with the Advances of Russia in Central Asia. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 403, [4] pages. Very Good-.
