HICKS, Granville - Part of the Truth: An Autobiography![]() New York, Harcourt, Brace & World, 1965. Hardcover. 8vo. Grey cloth with white and black spine lettering, dust jacket. 314pp. Near fine/very good. Faint jacket edgewear only. Quite nice and tight early (not first) printing of this author's memoir -- and extra-illustrated with a unique frontispiece: Tipped facing title page is a Typed Note Signed from Hicks, 1p, 8¼" X 5¼", Grafton, NY, 10 October 1948. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93), notable Lincoln/Civil War scholar. Near fine. On imprinted letterhead. Gates apparently contacted Hicks, who for many years acted as an editorial consultant for Macmillan Company, regarding an unidentified manuscript presumably by the wife of Mount Rushmore sculptor Gutzon Borglum -- wife #2 (Mary Montgomery Williams Borglum, 1874-1955). Hicks replies: "In what state is Mrs. Borglum's manuscript? If it is ready for the publisher, I should be glad to take a look at it and then send it on to Macmillan. If, on the other hand, it has to be put in final shape, and she is looking for advice and/or assistance, I don't know that I have time to spend on it. Will you let me know about this? I'd rather not get in touch with her until I have a little more information.." Boldly signed in full in black ink. (Interestingly, a pamphlet titled "Gutzon Borglum: A Brief Sketch of His Life and Work" by her was published by the Mount Rushmore Memorial Society in 1941 and a full-length book titled "Give the Man Room: The Story of Gutzon Borglum" by her and Robert J. Casey was published in 1952 by Bobbs-Merrill.) American literary critic, author and novelist Hicks (1901-82) gained fame as spokesman for the American proletarian literary movement of the 1930s, which made him one of the best-known Communists of his generation; he co-authored "John Reed: The Making of a Revolutionary" (1936) as well as quite a few nonfiction literary studies and some novels; in 1934 he became editor of the influential "The New Masses. .
