- Picture History Portfolio

 1554314046,
New York, New York Times Co, Publisher, 1923. Hardcover. Folio. Purple cloth with gilt lettering and elaborate gilt rules. 480pp. Extensive illustrations, marbled endpapers and page edges. Very good. Binding a bit irregularly sunned and lightly edgeworn, but tight and attractive overall; text block lightly age toned as expected. First edition. Tight, quite nice and internally fine, this hefty compilation of sepia-tone photographs and others images cover every manner of news story of the day: Current events, travel, history, [politics, war, nature, the arts, etc. Sections of these sepia-tone images (printed on delicate newsprint-quality stock) also appeared in "The New York Times" and other daily newspapers of the period, although in this form many if not most have become brittle and edgeworn beyond repair -- but in this hardbound form they are largely protected from aging and remain supple and are 100% free of the edge tears and edge chipping that normally plague them. A remarkable view of newspaper coverage of the 1920s in a superb form usually not seen. .
