The spines are darkened and the cloth soiled; the soiling on the second book has a reddish color. The gilt spine text and cover decorations are a bit dull with age. Pages lightly age-tanned and foxed, but otherwise clean. Recased with new endpapers; the binding is quite secure. Charles Lanman (1819-1895) was a librarian who worked in various capacities for the U.S. government. This Western travel memoir of his is illustrated with numerous tissue-protected plates. .
