Passport 1858 single sheet loose leaf passport for Algernon Strickland 'travelling on the continent' issued by James Howard (Earl of Malmesbury) dated 28th July 1858 for the Foreign Office, signed Malmesbury; stamped and signed variously for France, Naples and Rome verso. Original folded paper document: 38.5cm x 26.5cm. Lightly soiled, edges chipped and creased. Text reads: We, James Howard, Earl of Malmesbury, Viscount Fitz-Harris, Baron Malmesbury, a Peer of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, a Member of Her Britannic Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council, Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, etc. etc. etc. Request and require in the Name of Her Majesty, all those whom it may concern, to allow Mr. Algernon A. Strickland (British Subject) travelling on the Continent. To pass freely without let or hindrance, and to afford him every assistance and protection of which he may stand in need. Given at the Foreign Office, London, the 28 day of July 1858 . Countries visited include: France 3 December 1858; Napoli 9 April 1862; Rome 10 April 1862 ** "Algernon Augustine de Lille Strickland was born on 26 January 1837. Banker (Charles Hoare & Co.) and J.P. He was the son of Augustine Edmund Christopher Strickland and Susan Caroline Deacon. He married Charlotte Anne Hoare, daughter of Peter Richard Hoare and Lady Sophia Marsham, on 28 January 1863, and they had 5 children. He died on 18 January 1914 at age 76. He graduated from Merton College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.) He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Devon. He lived at Apperley Court, Gloucestershire, England." - See The Peerage.
