Little Brown & Co., Boston MA,, 1897. 2 vols., 8vo., Seventh Edition, with 7 maps (one folding) and 6 battle-charts; elegantly bound in crushed dark green half morocco BY LAUNDER & PFISTER, marbled boards ruled in gilt, backs with five raised bands tooled in gilt, second and third compartments tooled and lettered in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt with rope frame and anchor motif, gilt tops, laid and marbled endpapers, red ribbon marker in each volume, an outstanding copy. With the ornate gilt leather bookplate of M.E.N Tooth on front paste-downs. The binding Is signed on front free endpaper versos. It is possible that this binding was executed by Alfred William Launder himself, or at least overseen by him. First published in 1892, this is the second of Mahan's three great historical surveys of 'sea power' (a term coined by Mahan) which taken together cover the period 1660-1812.
