Stapel, 4th book issued by C.W.Th. van Boetzelaer van Asperen en Dubbeldam. - - Pieter van Dam (Amersfoort, 8 October 1621 - Amsterdam, 17 May 1706) was a lawyer for the Amsterdam chamber of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) for the last 54 years of his life. In that capacity he was also appointed for many years in the same position at the Heren XVII, the central board of the VOC. He is best known today for his description of the history of the VOC from its foundation until the beginning of 1701. In 1688 Van Dam asked for an honorable discharge as a lawyer. He was refused this in the most emphatic way and in the most honorable terms. The Heren XVII commissioned him to compile a pertinent and accurate description of the history of the VOC. The order was given to him on July 9, 1693. On March 10, 1701, his work was finished. The work was intended for the VOC and only two copies are known. Because it was known in advance that the content would not be published, contemporary historians believe that Van Dam actually spoke the truth in his books, as there were no reasons to cover up anything. The work Beschryvinge of the East India Company was published in print in 1927 by F.W. Stapel and C.W.Th. baron van Boetzelaer van Asperen and Dubbeldam. It consists of eight parts and can now be consulted online. [Source: Wikipedia]. - - In fine condition.
