[Gaberbocchus Press]. Themerson, Stefan. - On Semantic Poetry.London, Gaberbocchus Press, 1975, 1st ed., 127,(1) pag., illustrations by Franciszka Themerson, lay-out and original glazed wrappers in red and black by Stefan Themerson (21,5 x 13,8 cm.). = Gaberbocchus Press was a London publishing house founded in 1948 by the artist couple Stefan and Franciszka Themerson. Besides the Themersons, the other directors of the publishing house were translator Barbara Wright and artist Gwen Barnard, who also illustrated some of the publisher's publications. The name is the Latinised form of Jabberwocky and the first books were printed at their home in King's Road, Chelsea, London. In 1956 they moved to 42a Formosa Street in Maida Vale, London. In 1959 the basement of their office was transformed into the Gaberbocchus Common Room, a meeting place for those interested in art and science. Films, plays and poetry readings were shown there. In the course of its 31 years of existence, Gaberbocchus Press published over sixty titles, including their own works and those of Oswell Blakeston, Irish poet George Henry Perrott Buchanan, Christian Dietrich Grabbe, Hugo Manning, Heinrich Heine, Raymond Queneau, C. H. Sisson, Stevie Smith, Anatol Stern, Kenneth Tynan, Alfred Jarry, Kurt Schwitters and Bertrand Russell. Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi became one of the publishing house's most famous titles and was published in many editions. The contents of Themerson's books were often visual and linguistic experiments. The design of the volumes was cut from time to time for each publication to support and complement the content, using self-made paper and a variety of techniques. (source: wikipedia).
