FLOOD, Alan illustrates - A Beckett Metamorphosis> A Set of Six Original Drypoints of the Dramatist and Novelist Samuel Beckett.

Sheeran Lock Fine Art Editions, 1992. 6 mounted drypoints, each image impression approximately 200 x 155 mm in a card mount [matt] 435 x 375 mm, with accompanying page of notes by the artist, enclosed in a morocco backed cloth solander. This edition is limited to 20 sets which are numbered 1 - 14 and lettered A - F. The lettered sets accompanied by one of the drypoint plates as here, and lettered A. The drypoint plate enclosed in morocco backed folder which also includes an artist's proof of the plate. Both items enclosed in a partitioned cloth slipcase. The soft nature of the perspex plates means that only a few impressions can be made before the printing loses definition> as the 'first off the press', this copy has the best impressions. Each print is lettered, titled and signed by the artist. "A Beckett Metamorphosis was inspired by a photograph I had seen of Beckett's face. The series I produced came about as a direct emotional response to the power and intensity of the image... My principal concern with the series was a formal one. Beckett's face exerts an extraordinary iconic hold on the spectator. I was interested in conveying this strength, to root the attention of the viewer on the face and allow the imagination freedom to lose itself in a suggestive metamorphosis." from the artist's notes. His 'Beckett Metamorphosis' series of six drypoint portraits of the novelist, playwright Samuel Beckett were published in 1992 by Sheeran Lock. The art critic Mary Sara wrote: "As an example of the expressive potential of the medium the powerful series of drypoints called A Beckett Metamorphosis can have few equals in recent times." Incidentally Sheeran Lock was a company set up by Ed Sheeran's parents, John Sheeran and Imogen Sheeran [née Lock]> Flood also produced a drypoint etching of Ed and Matthew Sheeran in c.1998. Only one location is identified worldwide at Reading University and that the 'ordinary edition' of 14 copies.
