Title page for Commelin's city description of Amsterdam, Beschryvinge van Amsterdam, published in 1693.The personification of the city sits in the center, on a throne, holding the caduceus, symbol of commerce and a shield with the coat of arms of the city; the figure is surrounded with other symbols related to the city and its activities. Behind are the personifications of Justice, Faith, Arts and Sciences. Above their heads the Fama plays the trumpet, while to the right two putti shake out a cornucopia. To the right in the foreground the personifications of the rivers Amstel and IJ. On the right background the IJ with sailing ships.Van der Gouwen is a little-known engraver whose name appears on the engraved frontispieces and bookplates of editions issued in Amsterdam.Titled on the bottom right: BESCHRYVINGE / DER STAD / AMSTERDAM. Engraving and etching on paper; plate mark: 294 x 173 mm, total: 314 x 203 mm; some tears and light stains on the very external margins, sharp contrast, in good condition.
