Bound in original publisher's brown cloth over boards, blind-stamped illustration to front cover, gilt lettering to spine, rubbed. Welch, Bigelow & Co. stereotyped this copy for the publisher. Ink-blotch to bottom edge, bumping to, fraying of spine head and foot. From the personal library of a Civil War soldier, Mr. E.W. Rogers, 1st Lieutenant of the 19th N.Y. Battery, having "arrived from home" on December 26th, 1862. Title page says 1863, copyright page says 1862. 375 pp. plus 16 pp. of publisher's advertisements. This is Winthrop's account of his travels in Oregon and Washington in 1853, during which he spent much time among the Native American Indians of the Northwest, and he includes a partial vocabulary of the Chinook Jargon.
