Paris, L'Arche, 1952. . Softcover. Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Comprising the sixth volume of the series Psyche, published post-war in Paris by L'Arche Editeur. Translated into French by the author from his original German, a structurally sound, generally clean copy in softpaper wraps but with some penciled marginalia here and there, moderately and evenly toned throughout. From the library of Gershon Legman but not signed by him in his inimitable hand. Printed black, red and white wraps, protected in original publisher's glassine wrappers, some wear along edges, spine head and foot. Appears to be the First French Edition thus, and included is the author's Preface the Second Edition, from 1947. Wilhelm Reich (24 March 1897 – 3 November 1957) was an Austrian doctor of medicine and a psychoanalyst, a member of the second generation of analysts after Sigmund Freud and a particular follower of his, at least initially. He's famous also publishing several influential books, among them, The Impulsive Character (1925), The Function of the Orgasm (1927), Character Analysis (1933), The Mass Psychology of Fascism (1933), and later, Listen, Little Man (1948). His Wikipedia entry notes the publication of two stridently critical articles written about him in 1947 in The New Republic and Harper's at which point the U.S. Food and Drug Administration "obtained an injunction against the interstate shipment of orgone accumulators and associated literature, calling them 'fraud of the first magnitude.'" He was "charged with contempt in 1956 for having violated the injunction," sentenced "to two years imprisonment, and that summer over six tons of his publications were burned by order of the court." He died at age 60 in prison of a heart attack. Sometimes, however, books change condition insofar as they sit on the shelf for a long time, get moved by customers, get taken to and from book fairs, and so on. Most orders will ship within one to two business days, but often times, they will go out on the same day as they are ordered. I've based my shipping costs on the assumption of books weighing 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. If your book order is heavy or oversized (extra thick, extra long, etc.), I may contact you to let you know that extra shipping is required. Bubble mailers and boxes will be expertly and securely wrapped and monitored. Please contact us if there is anything extra or different you need us to do.
