This delightful little book is a mere 17.2 x 12.1cm in its maroon gilt titled cloth slipcase. It is only 32 pages long and printed in colour and gold ink throughout. The binding is maroon cloth gilt blocked on covers with an intricate design. Despite its size, it contains all 75 suras William Morris created four versions of the Rubáiyát and this Folio Society edition is based on the 1872 held by the British Library (Add MS 37832). The intricacy of the design on each calligraphed page is stunning, with recurrent patterns of delicate, nature-inspired motifs and exquisite classical and religious figures. Morris designed the borders and ornamental additions, sharing the work of the illustrations with fellow artist and designer Edward Burne-Jones - The figures were then painted in by Charles Fairfax Murray. This edition of one of William Morris's finest and most elaborate works is a complete facsimile of the manuscript, and includes a personal note by Morris at the end. Fine.
