Book condition : new. - Leo Polak (1880-1941), professor of philosophy at the University of Groningen, was an early Victim of the Nazi regime. In November 1940 he was no longer allowed to teach because of his Jewish origins. He ignored this ban, however, continued his lectures at home and his students attended as if nothing had happened. At the university he complained that he was no longer included in the general university distribution list. The content of the letter, in which he described the Germans as 'de vijand' (the enemy), was passed on to the occupiers by the NSB rector of Groningen University, Johannes Marie Neele Kapteyn. Two months later, on February 15, 1941, he was arrested and taken to Sachsenhausen concentration camp near Oranienburg in May, where he died in December. Many books of his enormous library were looted by the Germans. ISBN .
