Occasionally some light staining. Contemporary half morocco on silk-covered boards, spine lettered in gilt, rubbed and covers faded and small loss of silk, a.e.g. First edition. Julia Pardoe (1806-62), a British author, travelled with her father to Constantinople in 1835. Her extensive work on the city and its people and customs became very popular at the time, not least due to the beautiful illustrations by Bartlett. The plates depict wonderful views, the mausoleum and the mosque of Suleiman the Magnificent, Hammam scenes, Armory Bazaar, scenes from Scutari (Üsküdar) including the cemetery and fountain, etc. Several editions appeared.
