Bremer wanted to study American society in general and women's conditions in particular. She travelled to the north to visit the Indians and to the south along the Mississippi to meet slave-owners. She also visited Quakers, Swedish settlements, prisoners, slum quarters of New York, etc. She met with Washington Irving, Lowell, Hawthorne, Emerson and other American literary colleagues.
