Max O'Rell was the pseudonym of Leon Paul Blouet (1848-1903), a French author and journalist. In 1872 he travelled to England to serve as foreign correspondent for several French newspapers, and in 1876 became the French master at St. Paul's School in London. His first book, 'John Bull et son Ile' ('John Bull and his Island') was published in 1883, and proved to be such a major success that, in 1884, he resigned his post. Several similar volumes followed, including this one on life in America. He was very popular as a lecturer in both England and the United States. .
