A prominent British humorist and cartoonist Captain Charles Bruce Bairnsfather (1887-1959) joined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as a second lieutenant in 1914. He served with a machine gun unit in France until he was hospitalized following the Second Battle of Ypres. He developed his humorous satirical series of caricature illustrations for the British tabloid, the "Bystander" while posted to the 34th Division headquarters on Salisbury Plain. His caricature frequently featured "Old Bill", a curmudgeonly soldier with his trademark walrus mustache and balaclava. Fine .
