After an introductory chapter, the main body of the work is arranged as far as possible in chronological order, the system adopted being based on the classification of monuments under ten headings. Five of these cover the period from the earliest times down to the middle of the 1st millennium B.C. - the era of the primary exploration and exploitation of the land and its resources - and the other five cover the remaining half millennium, beginning at the time of the arrival of the earliest Celtic peoples & continuing up to the arrival of the Romans during the 1st century A.D.
