Published when Wurdemann was just age sixteen, at the behest of California poet George Sterling. Her second book, Bright Ambush, published eight years later, won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry, making her (at age 24) the youngest recipient of that award. Wurdemann was the great-great-granddaughter of the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. N. B.
