Amsterdam, Jan Morterre, [third quarter 18th century], 8vo., modern binding in half linen and decorative paper, 140+(4)+32 pp.,without the engraved frontispiece, damaged titlepage, but otherwise in good condition, with a woodcut vignette on the titlepage and some decorative initials. Lit: Buijnsters pag. 39; Buisman 1415. The original publication in French is attributed to abbé Regley, and was thought to be published in 1755. This is the first Dutch edition, only present in three Dutch libraries. Louis Mandrin (1725 -1755) was a French smuggler from Dauphiné. He has been called the Robin Hood of France and he became famous for his rebellion against the Ferme générale, the hated privatized tax collecting agency of the French ancien régime (royal government). Upon his excecution in 1755 a ballade ballad arose, the "Complainte de Mandrin", that was sung throughout France and is still known today.
