Vanwell Pub Ltd, 2001. First Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 1551250640. Grey Hardcovers with red titles to the spine. A Fine copy with a solid binding and a bright unmarked interior. Very Nice. The DJ is in Near Fine condition. Les Chater was captured early in 1942, when the Japanese invaded Singapore and Java. His wife and small son escaped on an American troop ship and did not hear any news of Les for the next 18 months. He spent the rest of the war in POW camps in Semplak, Java and in Mitsushima and Kanose in Japan. His secret, daily record in four palm-sized booklets was an ongoing challenge, and a small defiance. Every death and its cause is noted in these diaries. Every meal, the activities in the camp, the personalities of guard and officials are described. The Japanese civilians, often little better off than the prisoners near the end, are portrayed as friendly, cheerful and respectful people. "; B&W Photographs; 9.24 X 6.52 X 0.95 inches; 250 pages; Box 34. Fine+ in Fine dust jacket .
