Alfonso Capecelatro (Marseille, 5 February 1824 - 14 November 1912) was an Italian Archbishop of Capua, ecclesiastical writer, Vatican librarian, and Cardinal. In his pastoral letters and other minor works published in the last years of his life he treats the great questions of modern times, especially those relating to public life in Italy. He had little influence in ecclesiastical politics, and in the end was overwhelmed by the course of events in the modernist crisis in the Catholic Church. This short work treats many themes that were relevant concerns in the modernist crisis. Capecelatro writes on the relationship between Christian doctrine and history, and on the task of theology and biblical studies after the advent of modern, critical modes of scholarship. Appended to this book is a "new apologia for Christianity in relation to the Social Question. .
