Inscribed and signed by author on front end-paper "To my faithful secretary Agnes Rix, Henry van Dyke,Oct. 6, 1922. Avalon & Sylvanora". Van Dyke was the US Minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg between 1913 and 1916. Miss Rix seems to have been known to him during that period and afterwards. Cover design by Margaret Armstrong. Dark blue clean covers with ornate decoration and lettering in gilt and blue and turquoise. Black and white frontis with protective tissue leaf, all additional 7 plates are present. Lightly rubbed corners, sound binding, clean pages and plates. Decoration and lettering on spineare dulled.
