The Adelphic Union literary society was founded at Williams College between 1793 and 1795. It would be the first extra-curricular organization at the college. Initially including all of the students, it outgrew its quarters and split into the Philologian and the Philotechnian Societies in the winter of 1795 - 1796, though both their goals were largely the same - the literary improvement and the intelectual culture of their members. Daniel Dewey Barnard (1797 - 1861) was a lawyer, politican, diplomat, US Representative from New York, and graduate of Williams College in 1818. Very good .
