In 1959 Savitsky contracted Black Lung disease and began drawing, something he enjoyed doing as a youth. One of the great self-taught artists in the modern era, Savitsky often painted characters and scenes from his life in the coal mines. Coal Miner Jack is one of his favorite subjects.
