Translated by Leslie Stephen with a note by Stepen on the Explorations of 1861 - Remarkable in the Alps for a long continuance of fine weather, and (as a natural consequence) equally remarkable for the number of successful attempts upon mountains hithertoo unascended. Stephen then goes onto list many of them. A comprehensive discourse on the Alps including descriptions of waterfalls, Alpine Roses, glaciers, summits, avalanches, chalet life, feasts and the pursuit of Alpine game etc. Half-title 407p; frontispiece & 16 plates, incl. tinted, all with tissue guards, complete as listed. In original but faded maroon boards with a bright gilt Alpine Climbing scene on front board (as the Plate Alpine Summit opposite p.226). This copy has been rebacked using the original backstrip (deficient at the top but not affecting titling). Original endpapers laid down with advertisements on both pastedowns. Internally clean with minimal foxing. Owners signature (Edward N Buxton October 1861) on title page. This is probably Edward North Buxton (1840 - 1924) , British conservationist and Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1886. He was also an alpine climber, with significant first or second ascents in the 1860s, including the Aiguille de Bionnassay,Piz Palu and the first traverse of Lyskamm.He palyed a major part in the saving of Epping Forrest.
