No. 1 on the lower left corner of the title page. 23 pp. A primarily firsthand account of the life of John Woolman, with third person commentary interspersed throughout. Woolman primarily reflects on his spiritual journey in life, discussing his 'wanton-ness' in his early life, including killing a robin and her young, and his evolution of principles through his encounters with enslaved people and slavery. This includes his rejection of slavery and distaste for the mistreatment of enslaved people and of slaveholding in general. He also discusses his opinion of drinking, etc. John Woolman was an itinerant Quaker preacher (among other occupations, being an early abolitionist and advocating for the freedom of enslaved people. His work eventually led to the Quakers abandoning slave-holding and taking an abolitionist stance on religious grounds. GOOD condition. Minor toning and foxing. Good .

Return policy:
