In 1863 riep Thorbecke met zijn Wet op het Middelbaar Onderwijs dit schooltype in het leven: de hogere burgerschool, de hbs. De hbs bereidde voor op hoge functies in handel en industrie en moest zorgen voor een roemrijke toekomst van Nederland.

- All items are assumed to be complete and in the original or contemporary binding, unless otherwise stated. Minor defects, such as small stamps, tickets, labels and small inscriptions, or unimportant stains or damage to bindings are in general not mentioned.
- All books are in Octavo, unless another format is given.
- Any item may be returned within 7 days after receipt without further explanation. After that restitution of the purchase-price (but not of the dispatch-costs) will take place. If the item is returned because of an inaccurate desription, the dispatch-costs as well as the return-costs will be restituted. In both cases prior notification by e-mail will be appreciated.
