Charles Maltby (1811 - 1900) was a lifelong friend and colleague of Abraham Lincoln, having among other things clerked together at a store in ew Salem, Illinois in the early 1830s. After Lincoln's election to the presidency, he appointed Maltby - firstly, as collector of internal revenue for the Fifth District of California and later - as Superintendent of Indian Affairs in California. Starting in 1878, Maltby wrote a series of articles of his pmemories of Lincoln, which were printed in the Press journal in Santa Barbara under the title: "Abraham Lincoln: Personal Recollections of a Good President."
