Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts in 1872, Alger grew up in New England and graduated with honors from Harvard in 1852, He was. a teacher and a minister from Harvard in 1852 for a short time, contributing hundreds of poems, stories, and sketches for adult readers to early literary weekly and monthly magazines. In 1866, he moved to New York and wrote his first successful juvenile novels Ragged Dick. He remained a professional writer, writing more than a hundred popular juvenile books, until his death in 1899 in Natick, Maassacahusetts.
