Atget, Eugene, introduction by Wilfried Wiegand, - Paris.

NY, teNeues, nd. VG in VG DJ. Although Atget died more than 20 years ago, his photos of Paris continue to represent for many the essense of the city's lyrical. ephemeral beauty. For more than 20 years, Atget travbeled the streets of Paris at dawn, recognizable in an old black coat, and carrying with him many pounds of cumbersome camera equipment, including a tripod and a stack of glass negatives. He took more than 8,000 photos of the city. His fascination lay with the less orderly side of Paris: the dark doorways of twisting streets; the decaying facades of once regal buildings; the brothels and storefronts and shabby cafes. He captured daily life in Paris with loving accuracy and sensitivity in detail, yet he never imposed an overwhelming sense of mood. Many contemporary artists purchased his photos as studies for their own works of art.
