Arthur, Eric and Dudley Witney, - The Barn: a vainishing landmark in North America.Toronto, Canada, McClelland and Stewart Ltd, (1972). VG ex-library. In honor of the last three centuries in N. America, with great traditions behind them in Europe, they nevertheless evolved. a barn structure that was of their own time and place, and dependent from thumb latch to ridge pole on the labor of the hands of the farmers and carpenter builders and the natural resources of forest and field. With a high degree of imagination and a standard of craftsmanship not surpassed in the more sophisticated architecture of their own and our time, they built barns that can rank with the finest vernacular buildings of the world. One might try to explain the importance of the barn in strictly economic terms but that doesn't account for a farmer's love of his barn.
