Inscription of previous owner on title page, followed by translators preface. * A novella of the Byzantine/Roman General Belisarius, whom Justinian tasked with reconquering the western empire in 533 AD. Belisarius despite his successes is reduced to poverty by Justinian, serving as an apocraphal tale and an allegory for the arrogance of contemporary French King Louis XV. A notable chapter in this book promoting religious tolerance incured the censure of the Archbishop of Paris. Marmontel gained the patronage of Madame de Pompadour and fled Paris following the revolution.
