McNicholas, John T., Archbishop of Cincinnati - Communism, Its Evils and Its Causes

S. l. (Cincinnati), By the author, 1937. First edition; 6 x 4; pp. 2-28; white self-wraps, printed and ruled in black; several lines lightly underlined in pencil; slight indentation to upper margin of front wrap (removed paper clip) and a small rubbed spot to lower corner; overall in very good condition. John T. McNicholas (1877 - 1950) was an Irish-born Roman Catholic priest, Bishop of Duluth, and Archbishop of Cincinnati. He was also the Director of of the Holy Name Society and founder of the Catholic Legion of Decency (later renamed the National Legion of Decency). With Catholic anti-Communism in the US becoming prominent in the 1930s, an interesting trend emerged, where Communism was perceived as a spiritual and philosophical menace, rather than an actual, political threat. In his current booklet, Archbishop McNicholas elaborated on the ideas and causes of Communism and its efforts in the US (including trying to bring the American negroes into its fold). Very good .
