ANDERSON William J - Architectural Studies in Italy

Glasgow, Maclure, Macdonald & Co. 1890 41 plates, with unpaginated text for each, introduction including sketch by Thomson facing title page, dedication from the author on the half-title page. 43x33, cloth, glt decoration. Some rubbing and marks to cloth, pulling to top and bottom of spine, otherwise very good. This is copy 73 of only 150 printed. Beautifully produced work, a fine tribute to the author's draughtsmanship and the printers' expertise. Anderson was the first recipient of the Alexander Thomson Travelling Scholarship in 1887, and this book is a collection of his sketches during his travels in Italy that the scholarship funded. Also in 1890 he became President of the Glasgow Architectural Association. By 1894 he was Director of the Architectural Department at Glasgow's renowned School of Art, while continuing to write and practice privately. Tragically, a collapse at a site where he was the supervising architect led to five deaths of workmen; Anderson suffered a nervous breakdown in the aftermath of the inquest, and took his own life at the age of 37 in 1900.
