Brown cloth with blind-stamp decoration. Bright gilt titles to both front board and spine. Light rubbing to board edges and corners bumped. All page edges bright gilt. Yello endpapers. Inner hinges carefully strengthened. Half-title, followed by engraved frontis, facing and engraved title-page, followed by a printed title-page. Illustrated with a further 6 full-page engravings by W. L. Thomas. Clean English text througohut. Adverts at rear include a green paper insert advertising: "J. C. Lever, Fancy Bazaar, Market Place, Biggleswade..Christmas Season 1879." Hence the estimated date of publication. A very good copy of this scarce book. ** "Sallie Rochester Ford was born in 1828 in at Rochester Springs, Mercer Company, Kentucky, United States. Daughter of Colonel James Henry and Demoretta (Pitts) Rochester. Sallie Rochester married Baptist preacher Samuel H. Ford in March 1855.. In 1860 she published "Mary Bunyan: The Blind Dreamer's Daughter", a fictionalized account of the persecution of John Bunyan, author of The Pilgrim's Progress. The bulk of the novel dealt with three women surrounding Bunyan and focused on their strength of resolve. Especially moving in this respect was Ford's depiction of the execution of Elizabeth Gaunt, whose death in 1685 allowed Ford to capture the utmost sacrifice a woman could make in service of her faith.." - The Free Library .
