EYLES, ALLEN AND GRAY, FRANK AND READMAN, ALAN - Cinema West Sussex - the First Hundred Years

Chichester, Sussex, Phillimore. 1996, First Edition. (ISBN: 1860770355). Hard Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A Fine unmarked copy. A large format volume of xvi + 240 pages. 257 illustrations. Foreword by Lord Attenborough. Preface by Alan Readman. The centenary of cinema has inspired this first comprehensive account of film-making and cinema in West Sussex. The South Coast was popular with early film-makers and the county had links with such pioneers as William Dickson at Worthing, George Albert Smith at Southwick and Cecil Hepworth at Bognor. Their work is highlighted and that of the film studio at Shoreham, which produced a string of successful feature films. The book also provides a rare insight into the world of amateur cinematography with the remarkable story of the nationally-acclaimed Bognor Regis Film Society. The authors are able to draw on much new research, not least in their account of the origins of the cinema in the county and they trace the travelling showmen who brought the early moving pictures to public halls, pier pavilions and fairgrounds. They go on to describe in detail the history of all the 62 cinemas that have operated in West Sussex. Thes buildings range from short-lived early halls to the sumptuous cinemas of the 1930's and the hardy survivors of today. The text is illuminated by a rich selection of illustrations, many never previously published.
