The England of William Shakespeare was not only his birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon, nor the place where he spent most of his life writing and performing plays - London, but also the many towns where the distinguished theatrical touring company of the day performed his works, presumably often accompanied by Shakespeare himself; Marlborough, Faversham in Kent, Rye, Dover, Bath, Bristol, Oxford, Coventry, Shrewsbury, Ipswich, Wilton, Barnstaple, to name but a few. All these places are described in relevant detail in the book. In London and Stratford there are buildings and landscapes that enable us to reconstruct, with the use of specially commissioned photographs and an illuminating text, the Elizabethan world in which Shakespeare lived.
