Fred Archer has written about country life between 1768 and 1813, his characters are fictitious, but as real as Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles, and any countryman over the age of 60 will have met types such as his squires, his hunting parsons, his tenant farmers and the labourers who knew the reality of near starvation. His village 'Ayshon' is Ashton in the Evesham Vale, remote, and overshadowed by Bredon Hill. 3. Very Good/Very Good.
