Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Two volumes in three. Brown cloth spines with gilt-stamped brown paper over boards. Volume I is split into two: one volume with the text, the second (portfolio) with 44 loose color plates illustrating U.S. Army uniforms from 1774 to 1888. Volume II (another portfolio) contains loose plates XLV to XLVII with uniforms from 1898 to 1900 as well as plates I-XXIII with uniforms from 1902 to 1907. All volumes have stains on covers and light wear to extremities, portfolio flaps have tears and chips, some plates have light smudges, one has a tiny tear at bottom edge at blank margin, but overall they are in very good condition with bright colors.
